Who Are We?
People often ask me if I am really Native American since I make so many Native American crafts. The answer is YES! My roots trace back to both Cherokee and Creek, and I do have a tribal number. I began making Native American items at a very young age, starting with sand paintings on cardboard, where I actually colored the sand with food coloring...and sold them to my very understanding family ! As I grew older my fascination with my ancestors also grew, and so did my love of crafts. It wasn't until our youngest son was in high school that I received my "Indian Name", as he put it. We were camping in the mountains and he had brought a friend to join us. As we walked along the river I began picking up pieces of driftwood instead of fishing. I found one that looked like the head of a horse (which I still have). I held it up and said, "I wonder what I could make with you?" His friend watched me and said "What is your mom doing?" Our son looked over his shoulder, shrugged, and said, "Oh she's just talking to sticks". Thus, my new name was born...."She Who Talks To Sticks"!
Our Brand: Peace (the Peace sign); Harmony (the dream catcher); Health (our bath products); Happiness (rock buddies, pet products)
My wonderful husband has stood by me through all of our ups and downs as have our three fantastic children. Gene and I met while fishing, when I was only 11 years old and he was 13! We married right after high school and are now approaching our 50th anniversary! We have done many different "jobs" during our life together, ranging from him being a Park Ranger and me a waitress, to ranching. We both entered the field of education, and after 30 years in the classroom we retired.......or should I say "changed professions" again.....because what we do now keeps us busier than ever! Besides running a ranch/Christmas tree farm, Gene helps me with my "hobby", which has now become a thriving business! We hitch up the cargo trailer and travel all over the U.S. doing craft shows as well as running our online store. It's just US...no employees....so I make every item myself on our ranch in Northeastern Nevada. He tells everyone that he is "just the driver", but I couldn't do this without him!
I'm A Cancer Survivor!
Several years ago I was diagnosed with Stage 4 ovarian cancer that had also spread through-out my body. The doctors gave me less than 10 months to live. I remember asking them what were my chance of beating this? Their reply....less than 10%. I smiled and said "Cool!" They looked at each other, looked at me, and I said "I'm going to be that 10%". And guess what...I AM! Being a science teacher, I started doing research on possible causes of my cancer, as well as other types. I discovered that 60% of what we put on our bodies ends up IN our bodies; and what was out there was not good! I decided that I would begin making my own health and beauty products, as well as products for our 4 legged children...our pets! All of our products are made of natural ingredients and/or herbs using only the purest essential oils. During chemo my skin was very sensitive to any type of fragrance so I also make unscented products. My goat milk and oatmeal soaps are huge sellers!
